Weekly Address: Helping our Veterans and Servicemembers Make Informed Decisions about Higher Education

In this week’s address, President Obama told the American people about a new Executive Order he signed on Friday to crack down on bad actors that prey on our veterans and service members considering higher education. Unfortunately these brave men and women are often bombarded by schools that provide false or misleading information about things like interest rates on loans, credit transfers, and job placement programs. The President’s new Executive Order makes it easier for veterans and service members to make informed decisions about financial aid and paying for college and also takes a number of steps to fight deceptive practices by some institutions. President Obama will always make sure that those who serve this country get every opportunity they deserve.

Remarks of President Barack Obama
Weekly Address
The White House

On Friday, I traveled to Ft. Stewart in Georgia to meet with soldiers from the Third Infantry Division.

These men and women have fought with bravery and honor in some of the most dangerous places on the planet. Some of them didn’t make it back. But those who did are now fighting a different kind of battle here at home. They’re looking for new jobs, new opportunities, and new ways to serve.

For many, that means going back to school – and America has a long tradition of making sure our veterans and our men and women in uniform can afford to do that. After World War II, we helped a generation of Americans – including my grandfather – go to school on the GI Bill. Now, thanks to the 9/11 GI Bill and the Tuition Assistance program, last year we supported more than half a million veterans and over 300,000 service members who are pursuing a higher education.

That’s progress. But it’s not enough to just help our veterans and service members afford school – we need to make sure they have all the tools they need to make an informed decision when it comes to picking the right program.

The sad truth is that there are people out there who are less interested in helping our men and women in uniform get ahead and more interested in making a buck. They bombard potential students with emails and pressure them into making a quick decision. Some of them steer recruits towards high-interest loans and mislead them about credit transfers and job placement programs. One of the worst examples was a college recruiter who visited a Marine barracks and enrolled Marines with brain injuries so severe that some of them couldn’t recall what courses the recruiter had signed them up for.

That’s appalling. It’s disgraceful. And even though the vast majority of schools do the right thing, we need to guard against the bad actors who don’t.

That’s why, on Friday, I signed an Executive Order making life a whole lot more secure for our service members, veterans and their families – and a whole lot tougher for anyone who tries to prey on them.

We’re making sure veterans and service members get a simple fact sheet called “Know Before You Owe” that lays out all the information they need about financial aid and paying for college. We’re requiring schools to offer counseling to help students finish their degree even if they have to move or deploy. And we’re stepping up our efforts to fight dishonest recruiters by strengthening rules about who can come on base and making it easier to file complaints.

When our men and women in uniform succeed, our country succeeds. They have our back – now it’s our turn to have theirs. And as long as I’m President, I’m going to make sure that anyone who serves this country gets every opportunity they deserve.

Thank you, and have a great weekend.

Obama: I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth

President Barack Obama is clearly on general election mode as he's ramping up the pressure on Mitt Romney and the Republicans. Pres. Obama said he wasn't born with a "silver-spoon" in his mouth - a direct contract between himself and Mitt Romney, although Obama never directly used the name of the eventual Republican nominee. Nevertheless Obama hit really hard on the Republicans throughout the speech.

"Right now you have two competing visions for the future of out country, and the choice could not be clear. Let me say those folks on the other side - I'm sure they are patriots, I'm sure they are sincere in terms of what they say - but their theory, I believe, is wrong. I never believed the government can or should try to solve every problem we got. I believe that the free market is the greatest force for economic progress in human history. I agree that everybody has personal responsibilities for their own lives. Everybody's got to work hard; nothing ever handed to us. But I also agree with our first Republican President - a guy name Abraham Lincoln - who said that in a true government, we should able to together what we can't do as well own our own."

MUST WATCH VIDEO: Pres. Obama on Reagan Taxes

On April 13th, President Obama gave a speech pushing for the Buffet Rule - which we now know that it was defeated in the senate by all the Republicans. Although the bill is dead, it's up to us to keep fighting for tax fairness in US. In the speech Pres. Obama made some remarkable references to Ronald Reagan.

“I’m not the first president to call for this idea that everybody’s got to do their fair share,” Obama said. “Some years ago, one of my predecessors traveled across the country pushing for the same concept. He gave a speech where he talked about a letter he had received from a wealthy executive who paid lower tax rates than his secretary and wanted to come to Washington and tell Congress why that was wrong.”

Obama continued, “That wild-eyed, socialist, tax-hiking class warrior was Ronald Reagan. He thought that in America, the wealthiest should pay their fair share, and he said so. I know that position might disqualify him from Republican primaries these days.”

Vote Republican Only If You're a Millionaire

Vote Republican Only If You're a Millionaire.John Cornyn(R-TX)
John Cornyn(R-TX)
Buffet rules states millionaire would pay 30%, even with all the tax loopholes. Mitt Romney would pay for example, only paid 14%, and he hides most of money in over seas, as does many, many millionaires - and the Republicans job is to protect the rich. Case in point, today the Senate Republicans filibuster Pres. Obama's proposal of the Buffet Rule!

Gallop Poll actually indicates that Americans are in favor of Pres. Obama's proposal. 60% approves it, while only 37% opposes.

John Cornyn(R-TX) went on Fox News to defend his vote today and said this was a "distraction" and "drop in the bucket" and painted as "class warfare." He must be clearly out of his mind because the Buffet Rule would create extra $50B in revenue. The proposal only asks the rich to pay 30%, which five percent lower than the usual 35% in taxes they used pay under the Clinton Administration. That is "class warfare" to John Cornyn.

Cornyn also pointed out the fact that 46% of Americans don't even pay taxes. But the fact is they do pay sales taxes and payroll taxes. The reason why they don't pay federal taxes is they are so poor, that they need that money to survive. The underline theme of his whole bs is that the rich and paying too much in taxes and the poor aren't paying enough, so Washington needs to pass law enforcing the poor to pay more.

Before Romney gets any closer to the White House - letter from Obama Camp

Obama - Biden
Friend --

By now you've probably seen the news: The amazing -- and amazingly negative -- Republican race for president is all but over. Mitt Romney is almost certainly our opponent in this election.

That means America will have a very clear choice come November.

The President believes that this is a make-or-break moment for the middle class, and that without a strong and thriving middle class, we'll never have the growth we need.

That's why he's fighting for an economy rooted in our fundamental values -- one in which Americans can not only find work, but where folks who work hard can get ahead, responsibility is rewarded, and everyone, from Main Street to Wall Street, plays by the same rules.

He's fighting for an economy that's built to last, with a genuine and sustained commitment to education and training, advanced manufacturing, and homegrown, American energy.

He's fighting for a country in which every child has a chance, and every American, after a lifetime of work, can count on retiring with dignity and security.

And he's fighting to ensure that the responsibility for delivering on that future is broadly shared, which means ending the budget-busting tax cuts for the wealthy that add to our deficits and crowd out the very investments we need to grow.

Mitt Romney has a different, and frighteningly familiar, view.

He thinks you grow our economy from the top down.

He'd take us back to an economy based on outsourcing, risky financial schemes, and massive tax cuts for the wealthy. He'd return to the policy of allowing Wall Street, Big Oil, and other special interests to write their own rules.

But that's not all. Below are five other things that should give Americans pause.

Forward this email -- and if you're ready for this fight, become the newest member of the Truth Team today and help get the facts out from now till Election Day.

1. Romney's positions are the most radically anti-women of any candidate in a generation: He supports banning all abortions, backed a so-called "personhood" amendment that could make certain forms of birth control illegal, and says he would "get rid of" federal funding for Planned Parenthood that provides preventive services like cancer screenings for millions of women.

2. Romney would repeal Obamacare. Insurance companies would once again be allowed to run up premiums, unjustifiably deny coverage for pre-existing conditions, drop patients when they get sick, discriminate against women by charging them more for coverage than men, and spend more of your premium dollars on CEO profits and bonuses instead of your actual health care.

3. Romney is a risk when it comes to foreign policy and national security. On many of these questions, he has shifted his position for political reasons, even within the same campaign. His only clear commitment is to endless wars: He has no plan to end the war in Afghanistan and would leave our troops there indefinitely. He called the President's decision to bring our troops home from Iraq by last Christmas "tragic."

4. Despite the lessons of recent history, Romney would double down on the disastrous tax policies that handed windfalls to the wealthy, but stacked the deck against the middle class. Under Romney, millionaires and billionaires would get a $250,000 tax cut, while families with kids making less than $40,000 a year would, on average, actually see their taxes go up. To the surprise of no one, Romney also opposes the Buffett Rule. He would allow millionaires to continue to take advantage of loopholes and special deals that often allow them to pay a lower tax rate than the middle class. And he supports tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas.

5. Romney would end Medicare as we know it -- replacing it with a voucher scheme that would drive profits for insurance companies by forcing seniors to purchase private insurance, paying whatever costs a voucher wouldn't cover out of their own limited budgets.

Romney and his special-interest allies are going to spend the next seven months trying to deny, downplay, or hide these facts from voters. It's on us to speak the truth.

So print these out, post them on your fridge, and share them on Facebook. Send this list around to friends who are on the fence.

When and if your mother-in-law, or cousin, or best friend claims that Romney is "moderate," you need to know what to say.

You are the President's voice out there, and I can't stress enough how you will be the difference between voters hearing our message or not. The more Americans learn about Mitt Romney, the less they like him, and the less they trust him.

Sign up to join the Truth Team today -- help get the facts out every day, keep the other side honest, and make sure people know the truth about Mitt Romney's and the President's records:

If people know the truth about Mitt Romney and President Obama, who they are, and their very different plans for this country, there's no way we can lose this thing.

This race is on.

Let's go,

P.S. -- We put together a video highlighting some of Romney's severely conservative positions -- which we all need to remember as we head into the general election. Take a look, and make sure your friends see it too.

Ted Nugent; 'If Barack Obama becomes the president in November again, I will either be dead or in jail'

Rocker Ted Nugent did little to quell his reputation as a conservative firebrand through comments at the National Rifle Association convention when he took aim (pun intended) at high profile members of the Barack Obama administration and voiced support for presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

"If Barack Obama becomes the president in November again, I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year," Nugent said, according to a video posted on YouTube by the NRA. "If you can't go home and get everybody in your lives to clean house in this vile, evil America hated administration, I don't even know what you're made out of."
